The Way We Have Fun is a children’s book inspired by an anti-social couple at a restaurant.
Over the course of a two-hour dinner they looked up from their phones about three times.
It got us thinking about the way smart phones, tablets and other devices are impacting the way we communicate. And even more importantly, what effect they’re having on the current generation of children who’ve never known life without them.
So, spurred on the memory of our own childhoods spent outdoors and making up imaginative games – Stace (a fabulous illustrator) and me (a humble writer) decided to create a children’s book with a powerful reminder about the fun you can have without a screen.
The Way We Have Fun focuses on Chris - an energetic little guy who’s gearing up for an awesome family holiday. Fishing rod and binoculars in hand, he has high hopes – but things don't turn out to be as fun as what he expected.
Whilst Chris takes in the beautiful views – (and sees a few scenes no one would ever believe are true!) – his family is constantly checking emails, taking selfies, plugged into music and texting.
When a mischievous guest steals the family's devices, there’s a little panic...
but luckily, Chris seizes the opportunity to remind his family about the fun they can have without their screens (they have a lot of fun!)
In this beautifully illustrated book, the images tell the story as much as the rhyming lines on each page. The book is ideally suited to children aged between 4 and 7, not to mention mums, dads, grandmas and grandfathers too.
On average children aged 8-10 spend nearly 8 hours a day with different media
There are more than 40,000 kids’ games available on iTunes
54% of children felt parents checked their devices too often in a recent study
In the same study, 32% of kids feel unimportant when parents gets distracted by their phones
Half of children aged 12-17 are sending and receiving 50 or more texts every day
The number of overweight children in Australia has doubled, with a quarter now considered overweight or obese
The Way We Have Fun is Australia’s first children’s picture book which explores the concept of overusing technology; it’s a relevant issue that’s on the minds and lips of a generation of people right now, especially those raised pre-internet.

If you’re wondering who the dynamic duo is behind this campaign, here’s a photograph (Stace is the blonde one!)
Me and Stace used to believe in coincidences. Until the day we first met in a shopping centre. Since then our lives have collided and we can’t seem to go more than 24 hours without a call, and no more than a week without sharing a tea (Stace takes English Breakfast and I’m an Earl Grey kind of guy). I’m the writer and Stace can draw. We’ve been doing this commercially for a long time, and now, our moment has come to put something out into the world that’s ours. The Way We Have Fun is the result of endless conversations, excited brainstorms, apprehension, optimism and a shared belief that the best fun is had when you look up from your screen.
